| Arrived in Port Phillip on January 15, 1841. He was an assisted migrant with a ninteen poun d bounty. James was 19 years old and travelled alone. Moved to Geelong and established himself as a storekeeper in Corio Str., Geelong. Affairs pro spered and he married Sarah Jane Caldwell in 1844 at St. Andrews Church, also known as Scot s Presbyterian, Yarra St. Geelong. Closest friend - Mayor of Geelong, William Burrow. They went into partnership and purchased 1 00 acres at Connewarre, 9 miles from Geelong, for fishing and other sport. In the late 1840's , Mr. Burrows tired of the novelty, and James purchased the other half of the property. James sold his business in Geelong, took his family to live on the property, which he named ' Charlemont". He erected a four roomed cottage. He had no knowledge of the primary industry, h e relied on his natural abilities to see him through. Architect of the cottage was McWilliams . In 1850, he was elected as alderman to Geelong's first Town Council. A position which he occu pied for many years. In 1853 the wooden ship "Earl of Charlemont", 945 tons was toally wrecked on Bream Creek. Jam es was on the Relief committee. In 1858 James owns Dietrich's vineyard at Fyansford, managed by Victor Cornu. He also had 4 a cres of grapes at Connewarre. In 1873 he sold the vineyard with 17 acres to Mr. neilson for 1 020 Pounds.
