James found William a job as a shepherd near Anakie. In 1846 he returned to Ireland. He the n went to the California gold fields with his brother John. They returned to their home in En niskillen Nth. Ireland.

In 1849 both came to Port Phillip in the 'Northern Star'. William paid the passage money fo r his fiancee, Ellen Beatty. They married in Melbourne in February 1850. They settled on th e Moonee Ponds farm.

When William worked as a shepherd at Anakie, he found his worst hazard came from several Abor iginal tribes. He sought friendship with the strongest group, giving them culled and aged ewe s, so they wouldn't steal the young sheep. This group kept the other groups away. The Aborigi nals developed a taste for mutton and horseflesh.

William conducted open air classes, teaching the Aboriginals English words. At the same tim e he learnt may words in their language.

An Aboriginal lad Hagga, aged about 20, killed a ewe and dragged it away. William confronted h im with other tribe members. Hagga speared him in the shoulder. The spear jpenetrated the upp er lobe of the left lung. It never healed properly and he suffered from this wound for the re st of his life.
